The Czech ITT Champion adds two more years to his contract.
Josef Cerny enjoyed a strong first season with the Wolfpack. A memorable second behind teammate Mikkel Honoré at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco stage 5 in the spring, he confirmed his prowess against the clock in June by taking a third national title. Then, at the Vuelta a España, he put in more solid displays in the stages against the clock, while at the same time helping Fabio Jakobsen secure the green jersey.
A lot of good memories, which Josef wants to keep on making with the team in the next two years: “I feel like the whole season I showed my good shape, with some highlights. In the Basque Country I didn’t win, but I felt like taking the victory together with Mikkel as we did a great job and crossed the finish line in Ondarroa together. I also have really good memories from the Czech ITT Championships and the Vuelta, which I did for the first time in my career.”
“I can still improve my tactics during the race and gain more experience. I just want to race and to win as much as possible with the Wolfpack. The mentality and the winning spirit here are so nice. Everybody, both riders and staff, are always motivated and go for it 100%. We won the UCI ranking and we topped again the victory classification, so we really showed we’re the best and I’m so happy I can stay for two more years”, Josef smiles.
Patrick Lefevere, CEO of Deceuninck – Quick-Step, was also delighted that the powerful Czech rider will continue with the squad: “Josef is a down-to-earth guy with an unbelievably big engine. He can pull on the front of the peloton, go on the attack, and at the same time, he’s an incredible TT rider. We can now work together to make sure his capacities come out in the best way possible.”
